Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez Results: victor, Scorecard and Reaction
Golovkin packed Madison Square Garden last month for his win over David Lemieux, and Cotto-Alvarez could cap off the year with a huge fight of their own.
” Alvarez became the 14th fighter to win world titles at junior middleweight and middleweight and the first from Mexico to do so”.
“I said I was willing to do anything I needed to win this fight”, Alvarez said, “and that’s what I did”. The three judges at ringside saw the bout by scores of 119-109, 118-110, 117-111, all for Alvarez, who landed 155 of his 484 total punches.
Maxboxing and Doghouseboxing had Alvarez winning by a 116-112 tally. One advantage Canelo Alvarez had in the fight is age. “I was fully prepared for what Cotto was going to do in the ring, whether that was take a defense stance or be the aggressor”, he added. CompuBox shows Cotto threw more punches in Round 1.
After the Mexican, Puerto Rican and American national anthems are peformed, Canelo comes to the ring in a black robe and traditional Mexican blanket wrapped around his waist.
When asked about the possibility of a fight with Golovkin, Canelo said,”With all due respect, if he wants to fight right now I’ll put the gloves on and fight him”. “It was a competitive fight”. “And you know, if Mayweather wants to fight him – we can discuss that in the future”. Once fighters go past that weight, they tend to get weight drained in dropping all that weight to get down to the 160lb limit. “GGG is a great fighter, and he is my friend”, Alvarez said. He increased his punch output and seemed to stun Cotto in the eighth round with a left hook to the head.
Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez exchange blows. Cotto was getting in, getting out and using lateral movement. Golovkin had also mentioned that he will not drop to 155, further backed by the fact that the WBC is not expected to impose the demands of Alvarez.
Tickets for theater screenings of Cotto vs. Canelo can be purchased online by visiting www.FathomEvents.com or at participating theater box offices. Cotto sustained a cut on his left eye near the end of the bout that was not a factor. Not to be outdone, Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) strolled across the stage and tipped the scale at 153.5 pounds. He fought the best of his generation and lost a few of those fights, but he won his share, too, and was one of the marquee stars of this era, a persistent presence on the pound-for-pound top 10 for much of his career. Many believe Cotto does not want to continue within the middleweight ranks and might possibly move back down to the welterweight division.
