Buccaneers running back Doug Martin stomps through Eagles defense for 235 yards
“It was embarrassment”, Cox said.
The Eagles can move into a tie with the idle NY Giants (5-5) for first place in the NFC East. The Buccaneers are two games behind in the race for a wild-card spot.
Three plays later, the Bucs are in a similar position – it’s third-and-5 near midfield. Sunday, they lost so horrifically that a large majority booed its team for more of the game than it didn’t, and left earlier than it had since Ray Rhodes was the coach. “We should have won this one”. It’s time to get a win. They got into the secondary and we didn’t get it knocked down. We’re going to go to work every day and just fight. Sanchez has thrown an interception in six straight games. Sproles answered with the same wave.
“We got a whooping”, Davis said. “And there’s nothing wrong with that”.
“We talked about being relevant”.
Sproles was unavailable for comment.
“I think everybody understands how bad that was”, linebacker Connor Barwin said. The game wasn’t that close.
While Winston has helped Tampa Bay regroup from a 1-3 start with a passer rating of 88.0 in his last five games, the defense should merit a few credit – especially for the win over Dallas. If Winston can keep the offense moving up and down the field, and even inspire a bit of confidence from his teammates, the Buccaneers could be building a pretty solid foundation for the future. None of it worked.
Winston, on the march leading to his fifth TD pass and a 35-14 lead, was in the grasp of Cox when he performed the switcheroo.
“That was a smart play by him not taking negative yardage”, Cox said. That’s called a disturbing trend, and despite all their one-for-all rhetoric, the cracks are appearing. “… We took control of the line of scrimmage”. You guys can get it then. He finished 2 yards short of tying Barry Sanders’ record for most without a TD. Martin would have broken the mark set by Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith. Austin was the target on the interception thrown by Sanchez in the end zone late in the fourth quarter.
Winston was sacked just once and credited the Bucs’ ever improving offensive line and running back Doug Martin for giving him the opportunities to shine.
Kelly himself acknowledged that his players on Sunday “may have lost focus, but I wouldn’t use the word ‘quit'”. That much of the entirety of Kelly I still have faith in. “Anything we do from this point on needs to be positive”.
Defensive end Fletcher Cox answered various questions with the same phrase: “It was an embarrassment”. Maybe not first-pick overall bad.
Winston had the best outing of his young career so far, tossing five touchdown passes and looking extremely comfortable in a hostile road environment.
On Sunday, the Tampa Bay defense picked off Mark Sanchez three times and the offense converted 10 of 16 third downs, its most in a year. Martin racked up 235 yards on 27 rushing attempts in an extremely tough matchup. He has run for 451 yards and four scores this year. The Eagles did not allow many yards on kick and punt returns, which was encouraging. Winston connected with five receivers on scoring plays in his record-setting afternoon. Huff spared Kelly the celebratory somersault.
“I don’t have an explanation for it”, he said, “but I know we weren’t ready to play on defense”. Celek came into the game with 355 receptions, one behind Jackson (who played for the Eagles from 2008-2013), and now his 362 catches is one behind No. 6 on the list, WR Mike Quick (1982-90).
