Google makes you choose: Light or Dark Side of The Force?
Gmail gets a new background image, YouTube’s progress bar turns into a blue or red glowing lightsaber color, and Google Maps adds Star Wars-themed pegmen as well as place indicators on mobile-the light side gets Rey’s crazy-looking land speeder. Google is as excited as millions of fans are, and to celebrate Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens it is giving you the chance to give Google apps and services a Star Wars makeover.
Users of Google’s apps can pick either the light or dark side and then watch the apps “transform to reflect your path”. You can see a couple of the links on the Google.com/starwars/ page once you choose your side. If you want to test out both sides, feel free to switch back and forth between the dark and light sides at will.
Google has developed themes and other Star Wars goodies for YouTube, Chrome, Chromecast, Google Translate, Inbox, Waze and Android Wear. Or the easter egg Jar Jar Binks appearance we’ve all been half-dreading/half-expecting?
The Force Awakens comes out in just a few weeks and producers are going all out to make sure that vital plot details are kept under wraps. For example, Google Maps will show iconic Star Wars vehicles marking your location, Gmail gets a Star Wars theme and wallpaper, and if you visit Google Play, you’ll find an updated version of Disney’s Star Wars app. You can also revert to the non-Star Wars look if you’d prefer.
According to Google, the credit for the Star Wars-ing of its platform is due to a group of fans working within the company who wanted Google to somehow celebrate the latest Star Wars movie – and through it, the whole series. The TIE fighters in hot pursuit are literally destroying everything in sight, leading us to question what exactly it is they’ve done to get on their wrong side.
