No. 7 Oklahoma 30, No. 18 TCU 29
Mayfield suffered a head injury after he was hit in the back of the helmet by TCU linebacker Ty Summers.
Mayfield stayed in the game for the rest of the first half but was replaced by Trevor Knight after telling doctors during halftime that he had a headache.
Mayfield said he understands the caution and that Oklahoma has to follow concussion guidelines, but he fully expects to play against Oklahoma State.
Not to mention the Sooners chances of taking home a ninth Big 12 championship and a potential invite to the College Football Playoff, two grand accomplishments that are right there for the taking and over which the Sooners have a few control.
This story will be updated. After scoring a touchdown to make it a 30-29 ballgame, Gary Patterson and the No. 18 Horned Frogs made a decision to go for two rather than tie it with an extra point, but failed to convert.
If Boykin, who was a Heisman contender before his injury, can’t go Kohlhausen will likely get the nod, Patterson said.
Mayfield passed two concussion tests over the weekend.
The Frogs got off to a hot start, with Sawyer leading the Frogs on a 97 yard drive in the first quarter that concluded with a 37 yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kolby Listenbee, putting the Frogs up 7-0.
He passed tests given to him during Saturday’s first half, at halftime and again Sunday. Though Mayfield’s practice routine does not involve contact, he will have to get through a full week without a setback, ESPN noted. Aaron Green ran for 126 yards and a touchdown for TCU.The Sooners have won six consecutive games since losing to Texas on October 10. That may be the case, and Oklahoma is fortunate that all three have seen live game action, even started games for the Sooners, which is something that a number of teams can’t say. Which, sadly, pretty much describes the entire second half. TCU scored a touchdown with 8:59 left on an 86-yard pass from Bram Kohlhausen – who came off the bench – to KaVontae Turpin and kicked a field goal two and a half minutes later. “I would have him as questionable”, coach Art Briles said Monday.
“There certainly is optimism but there’s a protocol we have to go through, a few serial testing and progression of activity, we’re in the midst of that now”, Sooners trainer Scott Anderson said.
Not only was Mayfield hurt, but Perine appeared to have hurt his leg while getting tackled on OU’s opening possession of the second half. “It was a guy that kind of turned me around, and then I got hit on the way down”. Still, without Trevone Boykin and Josh Doctson, Patterson probably felt the Sooners had the talent edge; as a double-digit underdog on the road, he wanted the game to be decided on one play. “Regardless of who’s playing for them, they’re a good football team, and I knew they would be”.
