Suspect arrested in shooting of Tulane medical student Peter Gold

Peter Gold was shot in the stomach around 4 a.m. Friday near the intersection of St. Mary and Magazine streets, the NOPD said.

According to police, the man was demanding Gold hand over valuables, but Gold insisted he didn’t have any before he was shot.

Gold’s cousin is thankful and even the quality of the surveillance video, he said was excellent evidence against the shooter. He tried to intervene, but the suspect pointed a gun at him and demanded money, police said.

Gold, who also completed his undergraduate studies at Tulane, received the Sociology Department’s “Outstanding Student” award the year he graduated.

Euric Cain, 21, is charged with armed robbery, second-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder in the shooting that was captured in a chilling security-camera video. The woman was later found with minor injuries.

Supt. Harrison says Euric Cain has a lengthy criminal record, explaining, “We know that Cain was last arrested on November 2nd for possession of a stolen cell phone that was taken in a carjacking in the first district”.

The attacker shot Gold once, before, as the witness described, the gun jammed while the robber attempted to shoot Gold again.

“There’s no greater selfless act than to stop and help someone perhaps who you don’t know, for reasons you don’t know”, police superintendent Michael Harrison told reporters.

“Police worked around the clock and now he will likely spend the rest of his life in jail, as he should”, Landrieu said.

Gold is in his fourth year of his residency at Tulane.

Police said the robber grabbed the woman’s purse and left.

Gold remains guarded at a local hospital in critical condition.

Crimestoppers is offering a $12,000 reward for information leading to Cain’s capture.

“Doesn’t surprise me that he would have pulled over his auto and attempted to save somebody”, Ryan O’Halloran, one of his classmate’s at Tulane, told ABC News.

“While we deeply appreciate everyone’s concern, support and prayers as our family faces this crisis, our sole focus at this time is on Peter’s recovery”, a statement from his family read.

“I am shocked and saddened by this horrific event”, Fitts said.
