Suspect identified in shooting of medical student, police say
Police said 21-year-old Euric Cain was arrested in connection with the shooting. The woman falls and the man takes her purse.
A medical student in the United States remains ill in hospital after risking his life to save a woman during an armed robbery.
Peter Gold, a Tulane University student and Longwood native, was driving in New Orleans Friday night when he saw a woman being abducted.
“We’re going to find you, we’re going to prosecute you and you’re going to spend the rest of your life behind bars”, Mayor Mitch Landrieu said overnight after cops identified the shooter earlier in the day. “It really speaks to him and the kind of man he is to assist this woman down in New Orleans”.
The nerve-racking video shows Cain shooting Gold in the stomach before attempting to shoot him at least two more times.
Peter Gold, 25, a fourth-year medical student at Tulane, remained hospitalized in a “guarded condition” on Monday, according to his family, meaning that the outcome is still uncertain. When Gold reportedly said he had no cash, the suspect shot him in the stomach and attempted to shoot him in the head.
Tulane spokesman Mike Strecker released a statement Monday (Nov. 23) on behalf of the Gold family, regarding Peter Gold’s condition.
Tulane University officials are offering a $12,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the suspect, according to ABC News.
Supt. Harrison says Euric Cain has a lengthy criminal record, explaining, “We know that Cain was last arrested on November 2nd for possession of a stolen cell phone that was taken in a carjacking in the first district”. After Gold intervened, the gunman shot Gold after he said he didn’t have any money.
The gunman points the weapon at Gold’s head but the gun doesn’t fire. We also ask that everyone continue to respect the Gold family’s need for privacy.
“That is so Peter”, Tulane professor Michele Adams, who taught Gold, told the New Orleans Advocate.
“I am shocked and saddened by this horrific event”, university president Michael A. Fitts said in a statement.
