American Music Awards 2015 highlights
As always, Nicki Minaj was a show in and of herself, with her glances giving away her displeasure at Jennifer Lopez for daring to approach her “Anaconda”, but later deciding to play nice in accepting her award for “The Pinkprint”, playfully stepping her way to her podium to give thanks, and especially acknowledging her fans. The 46 year old wowed the crowd as she danced to “Uptown Funk”, “Hotline Bling”, “Love More” and “Bitch better Have My Money”. She collected the award from singer Paula Abdul, who won the same award in 1990.
The American Music Awards (AMAs) has always had the knack of cooking up astounding musical productions aside from awarding the musicians and singers who have made an effort to put together the best musical hits each year.
Ever since Meghan Trainor featured on Charlie Puth’s swoony track “Marvin Gaye“, the rumour mill has been hard at work pitting the musical cuties as a couple – and their antics on stage has only added fuel to the fire!
On a heavier note, Celine Dion paid tribute to the victims of the Paris attacks, which had members of the audience in tears.
The host kicked the night off with an epic, 10-minute dance montage of the year’s biggest hits.
Rapper Nicki Minaj continued her winning streak when she was named favourite rap/hip-hop artist and thanked her collaborators and contemporaries in her speech. “I voted, so I think you’ll win”.
One Direction also fared well, being named favourite group and artist of the year, for the second year in a row.
For her performance, Lopez made sure everyone was watching as she strutted her stuff in an elaborate beaded bodysuit.
Skrillex, who won collaboration of the year for “Where Are U Now” with Diplo and Justin Bieber, didn’t mention Paris specifically, but said, “There’s so much negative stuff in the world right now that it’s up to us to be positive right now”. Coldplay took the AMAs stage for the first time in seven years for a live rendition of “Adventure of a Lifetime“.
Teaming with Demi Lovato for the groundbreaking “You Oughta Know“, Morissette failed to muster the intensity that might’ve shown a new generation the impact her song has had on today’s young stars. The three-hour show, which aired on ABC, also included a clip from the upcoming “Star Wars” film.
Justin Bieber closed the night, drowning himself on stage with his song, “I’m Sorry”, but after the preceding gift of such raw emotion, he was just all wet.
Before her performance, Oscar-winner Jared Leto gave a touching story about his band playing at the Bataclan concert hall a short while back, calling the venue one of his favorite places to play.
