ISIS video warns of attack on NY City
Reporting from Times Square, NY1’s Herzenberg said NYPD boosted its presence throughout the city, but mentioned not much more was different. The video also shows a man zipping up his jacket with a bomb strapped to his body underneath.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said the agency was aware of news reports about the ISIL video and will fully investigate the matter.
NY City Mayor Bill de Blasio also gave a statement with regards to the newly released video. Officials noted there is no specific threat against any specific location in NY City, which since the 2001 terrorist attacks has developed extensive programs to investigate and respond to terrorist threats against the city. “We will not submit to their wishes”, De Blasio said.
NY City’s Police Commissioner has no qualms about heading out on Thanksgiving to see Big Bird.
Police Commissioner William Bratton said at the news conference with the mayor that the video appears to be a “hastily produced” one using old film footage.
The three-minute clip had been broadcasted on ISIS’s al-Hayat media network, which is a propaganda arm that focuses on a Western audience, according to Vocativ.
Two days ago an armed jihadi threatened in another video Isis would target Washington next. “We work tirelessly to ensure that, continuously upgrading our capabilities and our systems”, Bratton said. “Just in this last week, we’ve initiated the first wave of our new Critical Response Command, which will grow to 500 officers specifically dedicated to anti-terrorism activities”, he said.
The NY City Police Department reacted immediately and stated that it knew about the video and additional members of its new anti-terrorism squad are present to make things more safe. The city has stepped up security at these so-called “soft targets” like transit hubs, shopping areas and other heavily-trafficked areas.
Nearly 15 years after the attacks on the Twin Towers killed thousands, residents of the city have admitted to being attuned to the terror threat following the Paris attacks, but have said they plan on going about their daily lives.
‘I would anticipate that this is not the only operation that ISIS has in the pipeline, ‘ he said.
