Redblacks lead Ottawa back to Grey Cup
It was the type of dramatic finish the CFL has become known for.
Burris said he’ll return to Ottawa in 2016 but doesn’t see it being his final season.
And the Redblacks will represent the East Division in the CFL championship game after posting just two wins in their inaugural 2014 season. With a 12-6 record, Ottawa clinched its first division title since 1978. But Redblacks coach Rick Campbell said veterans like Burris provide a huge benefit for his squad. “You just know that the ball can come on your side of the field at any moment so you have to be on your P’s and Q’s”.
The Ottawa Redblacks say bonds between players forged through adversity have led them to the verge of a CFL championship. “We wanted to get a few type of real estate there”.
What we went through past year, there’s a lot of hunger in this locker room.
For Milo, the way the East final played out typified Ottawa’s season to date, with Burris and his mates displaying a never-say-die attitude. More top-end talent was made available for the new team to add and build around.
And sure enough, Ellingson did and Hamilton’s defensive back on the play, Ed Gainey, lost his footing giving the Redblacks’ wideout a good start for his 58-yard run to the endzone.
Burris admitted he had an axe to grind with his former team prior to this month’s home-and-home series but says redemption won’t fuel him Sunday.
“We’re going to do everything we can to make those people proud on Sunday and hopefully we can bring the Cup back with us from Winnipeg”.
Masoli and Tiquan Underwood scored Hamilton’s other touchdowns. We have the right mixture of play-making ability, leadership, experience, knowledge, but the belief is through the roof.
“It’s a ball that’s thrown outside to the receiver and you try to get the guys to go up and make the play”.
But the Ticats survived all of those factors – which Austin would refer to as excuses – and they were within one play of being in position to win with a field goal or even a single. That’s it. I am part of this team, everybody is, but I should have made that play.
Burris completed 9-of-14 passes for 123 yards. Stopping Burris and his arsenal of pass-catchers provides a stern test for a Ticat defence that’ll be missing Eric Norwood this week.
“I was only 10 and I’ll be rooting for the Ottawa team this time”.
“It’s nearly surreal to have this opportunity after what we went through a year ago”, said defensive back Jerrell Gavins, who missed the last two games due to an injury behind his knee.
Hamilton lost its bid for a third straight Grey Cup appearance.
“It’s an honour for us to be able to deliver this and to see the excitement from the fans”, said Burris.
“We just don’t want to stop because we’re having so much fun in here together”.
Ottawa last won the Grey Cup in 1976.
Then a 24-year-old CFL rookie, Johnson had been on the Roughriders’ roster late in the regular season, but he was deactivated just before the West final against the B.C. Lions and then was transferred to the practice roster before the Grey Cup game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The Redblacks have gone from dead last in the league one year ago to being one game away from the Grey Cup. “We’re going to be ready”.
