Chip Kelly might be doomed now in Philadelphia
Quarterback Jameis Winston threw five touchdown passes – including four in the first half – and running back Doug Martin rushed for 235 yards as the Buccaneers pounded the Eagles 45-17 on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. In this game, I just came in and just did my job like I wanted to.
We’ve been profiling college quarterbacks since the offseason.
Mark Sanchez threw three interceptions in his first start of the season. “It’s amusing, when you win and that happens, everybody says, ‘Those two guys are really competitive.’ When [New England quarterback] Tom Brady yells at [wide receiver] Julian Edelman and they win the game, [people are saying], ‘What a competitor the quarterback is.’ If it happens when you’re losing, there’s in-fighting”.
The Buccaneers effectively put the game away with a 15-play, 80-yard touchdown drive that ate up nearly all of the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Martin made the Pro Bowl that year, finishing third in the National Football League in total yards from scrimmage behind Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson.
There were a couple of brief bright spots that should not go unrecognized.
Sanchez got them into a rhythm with handoffs to Murray and, it should be noted, quick ball placements by referee Allen. He also had two touchdowns. Nelson Agholor had three catches for 11 yards.
Martin had 177 yards in the first half, including runs of 84 and 58 yards.
After a 45-17 loss Sunday to the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chip Kelly might have just doomed his future with the Philadelphia Eagles. And the Bucs dominated on third down, converting 10-of-16 attempts. Eight first downs were picked up on the ground by Tampa Bay. Winston connected with five receivers on scoring plays in his record-setting afternoon. “I wish I would have stayed home and saved the money”, said Eagles fan Ron Lawrence of Tamapa Bay, Florida.
This grade may be a bit harsher than it should be, because Caleb Sturgis and Donnie Jones did all that was asked of them. Sturgis converted both of his extra-point tries and kicked a 43-yard field goal the one time he was sent out to pick up three points.
After the recovery Sanchez marched the Eagles 86 yards in seven plays, connecting with Josh Huff on a 39-yard score. They heard plenty of boos on Sunday, many fans left early, and a few are calling for Kelly to be fired.
Winston’s first touchdown pass, a 4-yard fade to Mike Evans in the corner of the end zone in the first quarter, was well defended by Nolan Carroll, but Evans’ four-inch height advantage was too much to overcome. Tony Romo returned to the field Sunday and led his team to its first victory in two months. You do the math.
Bradford suffered his injury when he was sacked in the third quarter of a loss last week to the Miami Dolphins. Kelly is going to be roasted this week. “It gets everything else going on the team”.
The Eagles have a very short week before traveling to Detroit to face the Lions in a 12:30 p.m. game on Thanksgiving. We discussed Tampa Bay’s playoff odds heading into the week, but with the losses of Atlanta, Washington, St. Louis and Minnesota, Tampa finds itself just outside the playoff picture at 5-5, tied with Seattle in seventh place in the conference. Somehow, the NFC East is still there to be won, but do not let that distract you from the absolute mess of a franchise the Eagles have become since Kelly has been named the general manager.
