Suspect In Shooting Of Tulane Student In Custody
Surveillance video released by police shows a man that they identified as suspect Euric Cain targeting medical student Peter Cold on November 20, 2015 in New Orleans.
Police and federal marshals apprehended 21-year-old Euric Cain at a house late Monday morning.
Cain allegedly shot Tulane University medical student Peter Gold, 25, early on Friday after Gold, who had been driving past, intervened upon seeing Cain dragging a woman to his sport utility vehicle. Then, Gold is seen pulling over, exiting his auto, and then getting held up at gunpoint by the man, who then shoots him in the stomach; he tries to shoot him a second time, but the gun jams. The gun appears to jam, and the man lowers it and shoots Gold in the stomach.
Other news reports indicate that the woman did not sustain injuries in the incident.
Gold was also an undergraduate student at Tulane, and his parents and sister attended the school, as well, Fitts said.
Gold was hospitalized in critical condition, but his family said in a statement his health is gradually improving. Detectives were able to identify Cain as the suspect.
“I ask that you keep Peter and his family in your thoughts and prayers”, Fitts wrote.
In a statement, the New Orleans police said witnesses told police that both groups involved in the shooting ran off immediately after the gunfire.
It could not be determined Monday night whether Cain was being represented by an attorney.
Peter Gold was shot and almost executed after the medical student stopped his auto to save a woman from being mugged and abducted.
Police said the suspect then took the woman’s purse. Gold collapsed to the ground, and the gunman pointed his gun at his head and pulled the trigger three times.
On Sunday, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued a warning telling the gunman they were going to find him and that he would spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Police are asking for the public’s assistance in apprehending the gunman and are offering a reward of $2,500 for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect. Cain’s 17-year-old girlfriend is facing charges as an accessory to the crime, police said.
