Shootout that wounded 17 in New Orleans park is gang-related
Seventeen people were wounded, including 11 who were under the age of 21, authorities said Monday.
Police say two groups had gathered at the park Sunday, majority for a block party and a few for a music video shoot.
New Orleans police said witnesses claimed that both groups involved in the shooting ran off immediately after the gunfire.
Surveillance video released by police showed the man shooting the student in the abdomen and then standing over him and trying to shoot again, but the gun jammed. City police officers had been monitoring the parade, but witnesses said they were beginning to disperse as the after-party kept going.
“You got to stop it, it’s just insane to put the lives of this many innocent people at risk”, Landrieu said Sunday.
10 of those injured had to be taken to hospital with an ambulance, while the rest, arrived at the hospital later.
She says about 50 to 100 people were at the park when she walked her bloodhound-great Dane mix Dudamas in the area. Later someone called Jordan’s friend and told her that her niece had been shot. An estimated 500 people were at the playground. The latest was the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old man on November 14. He found a bullet hole in the windshield of his truck and three in his house. Witnesses told police that the gunmen ran off after the shooting was over. “We’re not going to stand for it. We’ll never stand for it”, Harrison said. Police spokesman Tyler Gamble noted that the music video was being made without a permit to use the park.
Police Superintendent Michael Harrison told the AP that the shooting may have been gang related.
At least nine victims were taken to University Medical Center New Orleans. While reduced numbers of simple robberies and assaults were big enough to create a 4 percent drop in overall violent crime, the numbers of murders, rapes and armed robberies all were up from the previous year.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu is calling on people with knowledge of the shooting to help police.
