Wake Forest beats No. 13 IN 82-78 IN Maui Invitational
Crawford had the ball at the head of the key for about 8 seconds before he put his head down and using a screen by Thomas drove to the basket to give Wake Forest (3-1) the lead. It was Wake’s first win over a ranked opponent since March 5, 2014, and was the biggest win of Danny Manning’s tenure at Wake Forest.
Jeff Roberson had 11 points and 13 rebounds for No. 19 Vanderbilt, which opened the game with a 27-4 run en route to a 92-55 victory over St. John’s on Monday in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.
“It is easy to get distracted with the beach and the flawless weather but when we are in the gym, we have to focus in and prepare to win”, he said.
The Wake Forest men’s basketball team upset No. 13 IN, 82-78, on Monday. Getting off to a better start would definitely help St. John’s as the Red Storm missed 16 of their first 18 field-goal attempts against Vanderbilt and fell behind 32-7.TV: 2 p.m. ET, ESPN2ABOUT ST. JOHN’S (3-1): The Red Storm managed to take care of the ball in their tournament opener, totaling only eight turnovers despite the rickety nature of the game. “We were much more physical in the second half on the glass, but not to the point of winning the game”.
“Once we got the nine-point lead we stopped doing the things that got us that lead”.
“We didn’t play the post-up game the right way”, Crean said. They were outrebounded by the Demon Deacons 43-30 on Monday and that turned into 17 second chance points which was four more than the Hoosiers, and oh by the way, the Hoosiers lost by four. Wilbekin and Crawford each had 13, while John Collins had 10 points off of the bench.
IN was led by forward Troy Williams with 16 and guard Robert Johnson with 14.
Crean said the final play for the Hoosiers was supposed to be a long pass that would have allowed Max Bielfeldt to find a cutter. Crean said his own coaching was sub-par, confessing to errors made while substituting throughout IU’s first loss of the season. “We have to win the paint game”.
Manning did a solid job in his second year as a recruiter at Wake, scoring an ESPN Top 100 recruit with seven-footer Doral Moore while also landing point guard Bryant Crawford, who to this point is tied for the team lead with an average of 17 points per game.
This one isn’t expected to be close when IN, a heavy 11-point favorite, takes on Wake Forest.
