Supergirl Recap: “How Does She Do It?”
Where, when and how can you catch the next episode of Supergirl? Alex deems it advanced Earth tech – not alien. It was revealed in the pilot that Jimmy came to National City to look after Kara on behalf of her famous cousin and to make a fresh start for himself, but now it sounds like he also want to get some distance from a bad breakup.
Cat tells Kara that Carter is special – he is gifted, but shy, and he needs special attention.
Meanwhile, it’s here that James and Lucy’s getting back together begins. James blows her off. “He says I left him, but he left us first”. Before they can go too much more in-depth, a bomb goes off and Kara has to go save a skyscraper.
Elsewhere this week, James (Mehcad Brooks) has a decision to make when his ex-girlfriend Lucy Lane (guest star Jenna Dewan-Tatum) wants to get back together. James’ affections for Kara may be complicated, but it’s not like she doesn’t have any admirers.
Tonight marks the fifth episode of the first season, which is entitled “How Does She Do It”, and once again it appears that Kara (Benoist) is going to have more trouble on her hands. Hank leaves Alex in charge of protecting him, and the two nerds bond over how awesome physics is. “This isn’t over”, she says, and flies away. Now, in addition to questions about Henshaw’s evil powers and her foster father’s true mission, Lord throws another wrench into the mix for Supergirl: who is he really, and what are his plans? I do not buy the crush Kara has on him, though. Max insists on trying to defuse the bomb, but when he does, the timer merely speeds up. She can’t save Knox, but she does detach his vehicle and stop the rest of the train so the bomb will detonate far away from civilians. There’s Winn, of course, and, now apparently Carter.
Let me not get too ahead of myself. He’s a sullen kid, but suddenly perks up when he hears a news report about Supergirl.
Later Alex and Kara talk across each other about some of the amusing business that went down and some of the things that don’t make sense. As usual, Supergirl pushes its message a little too hard when Cat gives a speech about whether women really can have it all (they can, they just need to go slow, is her freaky explanation). Alex tells him that he should definitely cancel the inaugural train ride.
Lord keeps going on with a train launch. She shoots it down and brings it into the DEO, thinking she’s being spied upon. Lucy, he says, is preoccupied with winning. Supergirl is still an unquestionably sunny series, but I’m glad to see it’s not afraid to go dark with its villains.
At the train station, Carter is bumped along with the crowd toward the train.
Then, like a good villain, he basically confirms it. All of it. He tells Supergirl that each obstacle was created to test her, to allow him to get all kinds of valuable information about her speed, strength, agility, vulnerability, and so one.
Winn tries to dive into the conversation and revealed to Carter that he does know who Supergirl is.
Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter is Supergirl? Lucy kisses him goodbye and heads to the airport…where a bomb is discovered! “Supergirl is on TV – I saw that when I was working out this morning”, he said.
On the train, Supergirl pleads with Ethan not to hurt anyone. He presses the button on his bomb vest anyway, giving Kara 30 seconds to stop the train. He finds it interesting that she chose to save 100 people on the train instead of 1,000 people at the airport and wonders who was on the train that she wanted to save. Out over the water, Knox and the engine both explode, taking out a length of the railroad bridge. Still, when he ends up in a room with Alex and yet another bomb, it sure looks like someone is trying to kill him. How would the bombings have helped Knox’s daughter? Kara saved the day, saved Carter and saved Maxwell but what was the real meaning behind all this?
Cat Grant and her mother do not have a close relationship.
Not only does Winn see Carter get on the train, he also sees a man with a very obvious bomb strapped to his chest just sort of wandering around. But Kara sees the situation another way.
At Lord’s apartment, Kara stands outside on the balcony, telling Lord that she knows Knox’s daughter’s care is being paid for by Lord.
On last week’s episode “Livewire“, we watched as Kara struggled to take on Leslie Willis (Brit Morgan) who, after a severe thunderstorm, had been struck by lightning. Unfortunately, Maxwell is responsible for the hardware but has no idea who is actually doing the deed. And more importantly, how did he dismantle it?
