Google’s Star Wars VR transports you into The Force Awakens
The Star Wars VR debut is the result of a partnership between Disney, Google, and Verizon.
If you thought some app remakes and a couple of easter eggs were all Google is planning for its Star Wars onslaught, you were wrong.
Google Maps – Easily locate where you are at with an X-Wing or TIE Fighter symbol. YouTube’s progress bar and volume slider turn into lightsabers. Once a side is chosen, you will begin to see Star Wars themes throughout many of Google’s applications, whether it is on an Android device or desktop computer.
Choosing the light side puts the user in the company of Jedi masters Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi; the dark side puts the user closer to the villains like Dark Vader. The force is about to awaken and Google wants you to choose sides.
On top of that, fans of the series should head to www.google.com/starwars and be greeted by a cantina full of Star Wars makeovers for your Google apps and programs. The tech titan also is now even encouraging you to choose evil, if your inner Sith so moves you.
“We started thinking about what a Google tribute to these epic stories might look like: “Wouldn’t it be cool if there was some sort of Star Wars thingy in Search?” The Millennium Falcon in Cardboard would be sweet!
Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB, Industrial Light & Magic’s immersive entertainment VR lab, created the content for Google Cardboard’s Star Wars special. According to Google, the changes will affect a number of products like Gmail, Google Maps, Android Wear, Chromecast, and more. Once you do pick a side, the Google services you use should have a little Star Wars flavor.
