Arsenal 3-0 Dinamo Zagreb
Arsene Wenger last night promised Arsenal can complete their Champions League fightback after setting up a win-or-bust showdown in Athens.
The Gunners’ 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, coupled with Bayern Munich’s 4-0 thrashing of Olympiakos, means a 2-0 victory or any win by scoring three goals will send Arsenal through to the knockout phase.
“It is a reality that in two games, against Bayern, we took three points (but) we have created our own problems before that”, Wenger said.
Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez were against Arsenal’s outstanding players, with Wenger admitting that he decided against resting Sanchez once the result was secure because of concerns over Olivier Giroud and Hector Bellerin. I have never seen Ozil in the box so many times as in the last five or six games.
“We will give absolutely everything to stay in the Champions League”, the Frenchman said. “It will be tough but I believe we can do it”.
Asked whether he would have backing from other clubs if Arsenal lobbied for a rule change, Wenger added: “I don’t know if I would have the support of anybody”.
It’s the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League on Tuesday’s soccer TV schedule with Arsenal playing Dinamo Zagreb on Fox Sports 1. “They are a higher quality team than Olympiacos and my opinion is that they will go through”.
Its a vital game for the Gunners and surely one in which they should win in front of their home fans, and their price of 2/9 to win tonight speaks volumes as to how the bookies rate their chances.
Dinamo Zagreb have not won any of their last 11 away games in the Champions League (D2, L9), failing to find the net in eight of those games.
Arsenal now needs to beat Olympiacos by at least two goals to guarantee a place in the next round.
However, with a heavily depleted team, in which Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott are all expected to be out, this will be no easy task for Arsenal.
Francis Coquelin was the latest addition to the injured roaster of Arsenal as he has been sidelined for a minimum of 3 months as he suffered a knee injury in Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to West Brom.
Dinamo have publicly backed Ademi and coach Zoran Mamic hinted his player was given a more severe punishment because he did not play for one of Europe’s big clubs.
