Detroit mom will get no-parole sentence for killing kids
A Detroit mother, who admitted to beating, burning and killing two of her children, is scheduled to return to court this morning for sentencing.
The judge threatened to have her removed from the court as she tried to interrupt.
Judge Dana Hathaway said that Blair had imposed the death penalty on her children.
An unrepentant Blair pleaded guilty last month to killing her 13-year-old daughter Stoni Blair and 9-year-old son Stephen Berry, who were found in a freezer in March by a crew carrying out an eviction order at her apartment. Blair claimed the two had sexually abused one of their siblings, though she admitted to not having witnessed the alleged assaults, nor did she ever file a police report. “I don’t feel no emotion for the death of them demons”.
She said she punched Stoni, put a bag over her head until she lost consciousness, threw scalding water on her, hit her on the head “over and over”, kicked and starved her.
Mitchelle Blair’s two surviving children – an 8-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter – are presently living with an aunt while each of their fathers go through court in an attempt to win back custody of their children.
The 36-year-old Blair is expected in court Friday, about three weeks after pleading guilty to first-degree murder. Authorities said Stephen was killed in 2012 and about nine months later, in 2013, Stoni suffered the same fate. Prosecutor Carin Goldfarb said there was no evidence of sexual assault. “But I’m the only one not lying about anything”, she said according to NBC.
A hearing later this month will determine whether Blair permanently loses parental rights to her two surviving children.
Wyatt Harris, Blair’s attorney, previously said he expects the other charges his client faces, which include torture, to be dismissed at sentencing.
Both fathers are fighting in a separate trial to keep parental rights over the children, now ages 17 and 8, after the state argued that they did not protect their children.
