Man arrested in student shooting caught on video in New Orleans
The Gold family has asked for privacy, the Sentinel notes.
Surveillance video released by police shows a man dragging a woman toward an SUV early Friday, and Gold pulling up and trying to help her.
“There is no question – now that we know who he is – that he will be brought to justice”, said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.
“Police worked around the clock and now he will likely spend the rest of his life in jail, as he should”, Landrieu said.
That’s in addition to a $10,000 reward offered by Tulane University.
Police are asking for the public’s assistance in apprehending the gunman and are offering a reward of $2,500 for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect.
Police stated that the crime occurred on the 1000 block of St. Mary Street near Magazine Street around 4:00a.m. on Friday (11.20) morning.
Supt. Harrison says Euric Cain has a lengthy criminal record, explaining, “We know that Cain was last arrested on November 2nd for possession of a stolen cell phone that was taken in a carjacking in the first district”. He fiddles with the gun and tries two more times to shoot Gold in the face.
Gold was shot after he attempted to stop Cain, who then pointed a gun at Gold and demanded money before shooting him, officials said.
NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison praised Gold for his heroism, according to WWL.
“You can call it divine intervention, you can call it pure luck. whatever it was, we’re just thankful it happened”, said Baker. Police said Cain’s gun jammed before he stole the female victim’s purse and fled.
The drunken woman checked into a hospital and was released with minor injuries, Fox 8 reported.
Driving through a nearby intersection, Peter Gold, 25, saw the attack occurring and reverses so that he can assist the woman. The police said his condition is improving, according to the Advocate. I ask that you keep Peter and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Tulane president, Mike Fitts, said Gold was a fourth-year medical student whose parents and sister also attended the school.
“I am shocked and saddened by this horrific event”.
