Newborn boy left in Queens church nativity scene with umbilical cord still
Police say a healthy newborn baby was found lying in a manger at a church in Queens.
The baby’s umbilical cord was still attached.
Sunshine Steven The newborn was found inside Holy Child Jesus Church on 86th Ave.in Richmond Hill around noon on Monday, according to ABC News. That’s when he found the baby wrapped in towels inside the manger. “It’s a attractive baby boy”, the Rev. Christopher Heanue told the NY Post. But the baby Jesus had yet to take up residence in the crèche.
The custodian who found the child left the church for about an hour and had heard him crying when he returned, according to sources.
Under the NY State Abandoned Infant Protection Act, better known as the safe haven law, a baby can be left anonymously at a suitable location within 30 days of birth so long as the baby is left in safe conditions.
Cops are trying to find the newborn’s mother, but several parishioners have already offered to adopt the newborn, said Father Heanue, who is facing the Christmas holiday with a renewed sense of faith.
Heanue said staff called 911 and the baby was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was doing fine.
