Obama asks Russian Federation to align with USA in anti-ISIS action
Obama said Sunday that it would be helpful if Russia shifted to targeting the militants, and that he thinks the bombing of a Russian plane in Egypt is leading to an increasing awareness on Putin’s part that the Islamic State group is Russia’s biggest threat in the Middle East. Tens of thousands of Rohingya have fled persecution by Myanmar’s Buddhist majority and landed in Malaysia, where Obama was attending a regional economic summit. Long before that, Obama had urged Putin to use Russias air campaign in Syria to target IS, not U.S.-backed rebel groups fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad, a Moscow ally. He called on Russian Federation to make a “strategic adjustment” and drop its support for Assad.
During a nine-day East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur, the USA president said that the “most powerful tool” to defeat the infamous group is to not become overcome by fear as the group attacks communities and governments.
“They’re a bunch of killers with good social media”, Obama said.
Obama also rejected building sentiment in the U.S.to turn back refugees from Syria out of fear that terrorists will hide among them. A terrorist organization that is 30-50,000 strong has taken over half of Iraq and a good portion of Syria. He repeatedly described the group as little more than thugs with guns who had little or no ability to “strike a mortal blow” against the United States or France. “We’re going to get it done and we’re going to pursue it. It’s going to get done”.
“You will see the degree to which they represent the opposite of terror, the opposite of the type of despicable violence we saw in Mali and Paris”, the president said. Obama said it was not clear whether Putin could work effectively with the U.S.-led coalition. About the legislation making its way through Congress, he added: “My hope, though, is, is that now that we’ve got a few time to catch our breath and take a look at this carefully, people understand that refugees who end up in the United States are the most vetted, scrutinized, thoroughly investigated individuals that ever arrive on American shores; that the process that’s been constructed over the course of several administrations on a bipartisan basis is extraordinarily thorough and currently takes between 18 to 24 months for somebody to be approved”.
In recent weeks, the Pentagon has expanded its investigation into the allegations and has seized a large trove of emails and documents as it examines the claims.
“Now, that doesn’t mean something couldn’t happen below the secretary of defense’s office”, Hagel said in an interview on State of the Union on CNN. “They can not beat us on battlefield, so they’ll try to terrorize us in to being afraid”.
