Colin Kaepernick Put on IR, Career in
San Francisco will promote quarterback Dylan Thompson from the practice squad in Kaepernick’s absence.
Barrows reported Kaepernick offered to be in Seattle for the game before going for surgery in the coming week, but the team elected to place him on injured reserve this weekend. “It’s one week at a time, one day at a time, one practice at a time, because that way you can focus on the details”.
They put Kaepernick on IR today which could Mark the end of his career as quarterback of the 49ers. With Kaepernick headed for surgery on his non-throwing left shoulder, the team was bringing in a quarterback for a workout.
Reports earlier this month suggested Kaepernick would not return to San Francisco in 2016 due to a frayed relationship between him and the team’s upper management.
With poor offensive line play and a running game that has done little to take the pressure off of him, Kaepernick has floundered this season. Dorsey was scheduled for an MRI exam Monday amid fears he sustained torn anterior cruciate ligament. He’ll have the surgery, and chances are, the Colorado surgeon will say it’s successful.
Thompson will be the backup to starter Blaine Gabbert when the 49ers play at Seattle at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday.
After his first start since the 2013 season against the Atlanta Falcons, Gabbert marched into CenturyLink Field for his second start – a stadium that has haunted the minds of the 49ers and their fans for years.
Asked if Kaepernick has expressed any bitterness toward the organization, Baalke said, “Not that I know of”. His $13.9 million base salary for 2016 doesn’t become guaranteed until April 1, so if the 49ers do plan to move on from Kaepernick it will likely be before then. Now, they will have to watch as Kaepernick sits through an uncomfortable situation as well.
Kaepernick’s time with the 49ers isn’t a complete failure, though.
Why not employ a nonthreatening coach like Tomsula, who makes the owner and general manager feel comfortable, instead of combustible Jim Harbaugh, who gave them the willies? The only other time he has shown up on the reports is following a Week 7 loss to Seattle when he suffered a thumb injury. Averaging just 181 yards per game this season, Kaepernick is leading the NFL’s thirtieth ranked passing attack – only Minnesota and St. Louis have more anemic passing games. He ranked 27th in the National Football League in completion percentage (59.0) and 29th in passer rating (78.5). He also rushed for 256 yards with one touchdown.
