Transgender student reports assault at Lewis and Clark College
“It’s a shock to us because it’s generally a very safe campus, safe neighborhood”, she said.
The threats and attacks across the Northwest come amid heightened racial tensions on USA college campuses.
Associate Dean of Students for Student Engagement, Cathy Busha, posted to Facebook a message from Twitter that reads: “Campus Safety & PPB are investigating the assault of a student”.
In response to the Yik Yak threats, over 750 faculty, staff, alumni and students signed a letter of support for black students at Lewis & Clark.
Tanguy Muvuna, who moved to OR from Rwanda to study at Lewis and Clark, said he was assaulted around midnight on Saturday by three white classmates who shouted racial epithets at him and attempted to force an unknown liquid down his throat. “To be black is not a crime”, Muvana said.
Police are investigating whether the incident is connected to racially charged threats made last week on the Yik Yak social media network, which allows anonymous comments to be shared with other users in a nearby geographic area.
“The original Yik Yak post was #bringbackslavery. I’m safe. I’m safe here'”.
Dozens of Lewis & Clark College students occupied rooms outside the college president’s office. “Ask us for a ride if you feel unsafe”.
Gonzalez said she’s open and is all about engaging with the students here to understand what the school has been doing and what they need to do to move forward. “Our first priority is supporting our students through all of this”, Gonzalez said, “and looking at ways we can continue to improve campus safety”.
Students said the reports of assault have affected the entire campus community.
While we are a city that prides itself on the broad protection of free speech, no matter how abhorrent the content may be, I am calling on all of us to stand together against the use of ugly, disturbing language that inexcusably threatens or otherwise creates fear in any other person. “It’s just sad to see it happen”. In that case, administrators said a black student was attacked by three white students.
Police say the victim of Friday night’s attack has asked for privacy and declined to release additional details.
“I would like to tell those who attacked me, I forgive them”, said Muvana.
