Anthony Martial back in Manchester United training ahead of PSV game
Wayne Rooney and Antony Martial have been training for Manchester United ahead of their match against PSV Eindhoven, although other key players remained on the sidelines.
Luke Shaw’s leg break at PSV didn’t just upset Manchester United fans.
Shaw had an operation in Eindhoven before returning to England where he has since undergone another procedure.
The midfielder played for 55 minutes on Monday night as Warren Joyce’s Under-21s lost 2-0 at Norwich City’s Carrow Road, and then worked with Louis van Gaal’s group in front of the cameras at the Aon Training Complex on Tuesday morning.
“Firstly, he was fed up with the daily routine”. “Fellaini can play. So that’s great news, I think”. “I do not expect him to attend the game but he could surprise me”.
That came as a boost to England manager Roy Hodgson, who has not given up hope of taking the left-back to Euro 2016.
When asked if Rooney’s privileges had returned, Van Gaal said: ‘No, that is not automatic. “In the second half, he was a bit less than in the first half but that is also logical when you are not playing because the match rhythm of the Premier League is very high”.
He said the 20-year-old was responding well, but added: ‘You have to be very cautious with an injury like that.
“He has been given four days off. On Friday he has a scan and we will know more about how the injury is going”.
Some have argued that Van Gaal’s side could still do with some defensive improvement as much of the money that he has spent in his two seasons with the club and he could do a lot worse than scout the Championship for some reinforcements.
“No, my players are not doing that”, he told his pre-match press conference at Old Trafford.
With the emergence of a number of young prospects making the step up from the Football League to the top flight, Premier League sides are seemingly keeping a close eye on some of the best players in the second tier and below. “I am sure of that, so I don’t think that shall be an issue. It was not his goal (to injure Shaw)”. “It’s too soon because they also need recovery time”.
Late checks will be made on Anthony Martial, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini, but Phil Jones and Ander Herrera are expected to miss out.
And finally, Van Gaal has challenged Memphis to produce the form he showed in last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Watford on a regular basis. It is always a decision of the manager.
