Canada to resettle 25000 refugees by end of February 2016
“Yes, we want to bring them fast, but we also want to do it right”, Immigration Minister John McCallum said, adding that was the clear message he heard from Canadians.
“When we welcome our newcomer friends with a smile, a smile alone is not sufficient”, says McCallum. Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey are being targeted.
In a statement, the group said it “applauds” the government’s commitment to resettling 25,000 refugees.
After February, Canada will continue to bring in government-assisted refugees in 2016, eventually aiming to welcome another 10,000, for a total of 25,000 non-private cases. This will include the collection of biographic information and biometric screening of all refugees, verified against databases.
Screening will happen overseas with refugees then flown to Toronto or Montreal where they will be sorted into their new communities.
“It takes a bit of time to put that all in place”.
IN lawsuit: The ACLU in IN has filed a federal lawsuit against Gov. Mike Pence over his decision to suspend the relocation of Syrian refugees in the state, reports the Indianapolis Star. And 49 percent said it was “very likely” that at least one person coming into the country through the process would be a terrorist who will succeed in carrying out an attack on US soil. These include complete families; women at risk; member of the LGBTI community; and single men if accompanying their parents.
Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan said the Royal Canadian Air Force is preparing to fly refugees to Canada every 48 hours if needed, and that the Canadian Armed Forces could provide up to 6,000 of them with temporary lodgings at bases in Canada’s two largest provinces, Ontario and Quebec.
10,000: The number of refugees expected to come to Canada by December 31, 2015.
“We are pleased that Mr. Trudeau has today listened to Canadians and abandoned a timeline that was not workable”, Rempel said.
The planned announcement Tuesday of how Canada will take in thousands of Syrian refugees will drive ongoing local, national and global efforts into high gear, with a program that will extend far beyond the Liberals’ self-imposed end-of-year deadline.
– Conservative Immigration Minister Chris Alexander admits that fewer than 200 Syrian refugees have arrived in Canada since the July 2013 promise, saying the UNHCR was slow passing on referrals.
The United Nations refugee agency estimates that more than four million Syrians have fled the civil war that has ravaged their country and killed more than 250,000 people.
“The easiest ones to screen and process would be families with children and elderly people… whereas the single young males might need more detailed background checks”, he says.
However, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall, a vocal critic of the plan, remained a skeptic after meeting with Trudeau.
But after Islamic militants claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks, the political pressure for airtight security screening of refugees took on new impetus and was one of the reasons a planned rollout of the program last week was delayed, sources said.
