Bases preparing to welcome Syrian refugees
That was on top of the ongoing resettlement of Syrians refugees that began in 2013.
Trudeau had pledged to bring in the entire amount before the end of the year and had been scheduled to announce plans for doing so on Tuesday.
“As we are meeting, there are literally tens of thousands of Canadians who have been laid off of their jobs in (the oil and gas) sector”, Wall said. The resettling of vulnerable refugees is a clear demonstration of this.
Canada’s stance reflects the change in government after last month’s election.
Tariq Ramadan, professor of Islamic studies at Oxford University, said once the refugees arrive in the country Canadians have a “duty to welcome them”.
The RCMP, which is involved in the screening of Syrian refugees along with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, said in a statement that it has nothing to add beyond what commissioner Bob Paulson had said at a November 18 news conference.
The Liberal government is focused instead on quickly moving the refugees into 36 communities across that country that have indicated their interest in accepting them. The first layer includes registration with the UNHCR or the Turkish government, followed by interviews, biometric and biographical data collection, and checks against public safety databases in Canada and United States.
Will the refugees be government-assisted or privately sponsored? The remaining 10,000 will be privately sponsored refugees, for whom there will be no preferred groups.
Canada says it is already working closely with the UNHCR to identify and screen the most vulnerable refugees, the bulk of whom will come from Jordan and Lebanon. The federal government has already poured $800 million into stabilization and humanitarian efforts in Syria.
The government estimates the plan will cost up to $678 million over six years. We are pleased that Mr. Trudeau has today listened to Canadians and abandoned a timeline that was not workable.
Ramadan hopes that Canadians can do not forget to recognize the individual stories of Syrian refugees.
But while some members of the Conservative caucus have been unreservedly critical of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s original commitment to bring all of the refugees into Canada by January 1 – MP Candice Bergen tweeted she is “embarrassed and sickened” by the Liberal leader for his stance on refugees and Canada’s ISIS mission – Watts said she has no issue with the general principle of accepting refugees.
The 25,000 Syrian refugees will be brought into the country in five phases.
The previous Conservative government can also take some of the credit as many of those files were opened under their prior Syrian refugee resettlement program.
The territory has also offered money to the Red Cross to support refugees overseas.
“The Royal Canadian air force is preparing to provide transport of refugees to Canada every 48 hours in support of this operation”.
Three Syrian families arrived in Calgary on Monday through sponsorship by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, in partnership with the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society.
