Mike Pettine: This isn’t a dead end for Johnny Manziel
This is where we had an obvious shortcoming..
Pettine defended his relationship with Manziel. “I don’t think you have to worry about me this week”. A video of Manziel rapping was uploaded to Instagram, and websites Busted Coverage and TMZ picked up the news of Manziel’s partying ways. He spent 10 weeks in an addiction treatment center in the offseason, but recently admitted to drinking and has been photographed with bottles of alcohol in his hand. I like being in the quarterback room.
“I’m especially disappointed in his actions and behavior because he has been working very hard”, Pettine said. There’s nobody that’s going to be more proud. When you’re a parent, you know that the concept of “tough love” is usually the best.
“We all know what happened and what got put out there, and it led to much disappointment, frustration, however you want to term it”, Pettine said during “The Mike Pettine Show” on Tuesday via ESPN.
McCown was returned to the starting quarterback spot, while Austin Davis was promoted to be his backup.
It’s claimed that Manziel had joined friends at a nightclub in Austin, Texas, during the Browns’ bye week, where he is said to have visited he RIO Rooftop nightclub on Thursday night before appearing at Summit on Friday. At one point, Manziel dejectedly hung his head and stared at the grass under his feet as the Browns practiced on another shockingly mild late November afternoon. “Like I said, this is taking a step back to hopefully take several forward”.
“We told him yesterday, this is not a dead end”. This is a hurdle. Pettine, whose job could be in jeopardy if the Browns (2-8) don’t demonstrate some progress the rest of this season, said owner Jimmy Haslam and general manager Ray Farmer support his decision.
Browns cornerback Tramon Williams declined to speak about Manziel specifically, but said he often teaches young teammates about learning to live with their celebrity.
“It’s a little easier to handle when it’s just a one-time occurrence, but when behavior repeats, not just him but with anybody, it’s certainly a cause for concern”.
“We all stand together on this one”, Pettine said. “But this was too important, ” Pettine said, to take anything else into consideration, adding that the move was “absolutely necessary to maximize his chance for future success”.
This is a heavy dose of adversity. “We will see how he handles it”. It is possible that Manziel informed Pettine and company that he has serious issues and that he can not control his personal life.
“It’ll be a process”. “There’s no magical solution to that”.
“But this decision tells me the Browns don’t trust him and probably don’t think he’s worth the trouble”.
