NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Police on Monday sought to determine what touched off a wild shootout in a crowd of hundreds of people at a New Orleans playground, where an evening of fun at a block party swiftly turned into a nightmare. Police have so far identified no suspects and no motives in the shooting, which left 17 victims with what they said were non-life threatening wounds.
In a statement, the New Orleans police said witnesses told police that both groups involved in the shooting ran off immediately after the gunfire.
Police said they are not sure how serious the injuries are at this time.
There are plenty of witnesses – hundreds of them – that saw what happened, and Landrieu and Harrison shared their hunch that many of those witnesses may have captured the violence on video. The police have also asked people who might have any video of the shooting to bring it to police. He said the victims suffered either direct gunshot wounds or were grazed by bullets. “As the officers were within one block, they heard shots that were fired”.
Bloodied gauze pads, crime scene tape and a child’s bicycle could still be spotted in the park hours after the shooting on Sunday.
A large crowd was gathered in the park at the time for an unpermitted block party and the impromptu filming of a music video, according to police.
“It’s going to require the people who were in this park to basically say they’ve had enough and they’re not going to put themselves in harm’s way and give us information so that the police can do their job”, the mayor said.
Authorities believe the shooters used automatic weapons and that it appears to be gang related.
“If you want to take back your community, you have to help us”, said the mayor, who likened the shooting to domestic terrorism.
“No one feels safe”, said Peter Scharf, a Louisiana State University professor who studies crime.
