Buried remains found 25 years after girl went missing
Forensic tests must be conducted to confirm the remains are Diaz.
Diaz went missing in 1990 from a general store in Danevang, about 70 miles southwest of Houston, and the property where the remains were found is not far from that unincorporated rural community.
Fifteen-year-old Rosemary Diaz went missing 25 years ago Tuesday. Investigators were told back then that Diaz had been threatened by some teen boys she identified as bragging at school about allegedly stealing beer from the store.
There was no sign of a robbery at the store at the time of her disappearance, and her belongings and vehicle were found on the premises, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. He says they found a ring believed to belong to the missing girl, and that is the most crucial link at this time. The suspect died some time ago of an illness, but he had made partial confessions to various family members in his last years of life.
“We made a goal, we wanted her house by Christmas, but God had different strategies”, said Tim Miller, whose search and recovery group EquuSearch aided law enforcement in the investigation, at a Wednesday press conference.
Investigators tell KTRK that they are excavating in a remote area close to Highway 71 after receiving “new information”.
The organisation said it took aerial pictures to determine places to investigate and came across the remains on the first day of searching on the ground.
Rosemary Diaz, 15, never returned home from her part-time job. Through tears she described the family’s underlying frustration, “It was just not knowing all these years”. The sheriff’s office said officials do not believe Diaz knew the suspect. “No one person had the full story”. There is a suspect in the case, but investigators say he is already deceased.
