Where Would LSU Turn If It Fired Les Miles?
“I have no comment on that”, Fisher said, according to The Orlando Sentinel. The news of a million dollar buyout is flying around the LSU community and making national headlines.
The latest was a mistake-filled 38-17 defeat at Ole Miss.
Redshirt freshman offensive guard Will Clapp said Miles recruited him personally and paid an in-home visit to him while at Brother Martin. 775 winning percentage is the best of any LSU coach – including Nick Saban (.750) – in the past century.
But here’s the question we don’t know: Would he really leave Florida State for LSU?
Because when it gets right down to it, when you look at the facilities, the current roster, the tradition, the incoming recruiting class, the incredible success of the last few years, the conference he plays in, the support of the fan base and the administration, you could make an argument Jimbo Fisher has the best job in America. “If somebody is asking me if I’m coaching for my job, I think I’ve done that for 11 years. I don’t think I’ve ever lost three straight games anywhere”.
Fisher talked in general terms about the upheaval in a profession in which there already are more than a dozen openings, including one at Syracuse which fired its coach, Scott Shaffer, on Monday. I feel like a sophomore now where past year you’re a freshman just trying to figure it out, trying to get the scripts ready, get to practice and stuff. “This is about preparing to beat an opponent and enjoying the young men that we coach”.
While Miles insists his attention is focused on Texas A&M Saturday night, Tiger Rag Editor Cody Worsham is keeping a close watch on Joe Alleva. After breaking the SEC freshman sack record in 2014, Garrett leads the conference and is tied for fifth in the nation with 10.5 sacks this season.
The $15 million buyout is payable over eight years and includes an additional $2 million total payable to assistant coaches who have a “Les Miles clause” in their deals.
That earned him the head coaching job at Houston, where he has developed quarterback Greg Ward Jr., into one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the country. Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long, who previously worked in Michigan’s athletic department when Miles was there, conducted that coaching search. I have a policy.
“I don’t speak about jobs”, he said.
But since we’re throwing out options, how much fun would it be to see Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin in Baton Rouge? Everything seemed to change when Miles’ 13-0 team of 2011 got embarrassed in a 21-0 loss to Alabama and Saban at the BCS Championship Game. Fisher was also the coach-in-waiting to take over for legend Bobby Bowden.
Near the end of Miles’ press luncheon, he was asked what it has been like getting to coach at the same place for 11 seasons, which is a rarity in his profession.
Like Perrilloux, Jordan Jefferson had a celebrated Louisiana prep career, going undefeated his last two years and winning back-to-back state championships.
