Will terrorists come into USA as refugees?
Over 2,200 Syrian refugees have already been resettled into the USA since October of 2010, says the State Department.
These words from Jeh Johnson, the United States Secretary of Homeland Security, are spoken in a recent video released by the new-media news source ATTN: on November 24.
Also speaking to reporters on Monday’s conference call, which was organized by the White House, were the mayors of Detroit and Austin, who said they welcome Syrian refugees despite the pushback by their states’ Republican governors. However, U.S. intelligence agencies rely largely on their own intelligence and the intelligence of their allies to determine whether a refugee will be cleared for resettlement to the United States.
America’s debate over allowing in Syrian refugees is not one of its prouder moments.
At the federal level, the refugee issue has sparked a major confrontation between President Barack Obama, who had earlier said 10,000 Syrian refugees would be allowed to enter the country, and the members of Congress who don’t want to let them in.
“All of us are God’s children…so I disagree with that assumption that only Christian children should be able to come to the United States”, Sen. However, the refugee question has also become a political battle; nearly all of the governors calling for a halt to Syrian immigration are Republicans, while the Democratic administration of President Obama defends the USA refugee system as safe. In his opinion, there are flaws in our country’s immigration policy.
“Syrian refugees are subject to even more precautions than other refugees”, he added.
Since there’s no way to figure out which refugees are people displaced by ISIS and which refugees are ISIS fighters trying to get into foreign countries, the rest of the Muslim world has turned their back on Syrians.
The entire resettlement process can take up to a couple of years, Alba said, with much depending on how long it takes to screen refugees. For example, the screening process for refugees usually takes two years and involves many government agencies, including the National Counterterrorism Center. But the refugee resettlement program is the wrong place to focus those precious security resources.
An “Action Alert” put out by the bishops’ conference was even more forceful in its rejection of the call to block refugees. “The federal government continues to keep Louisiana in the dark regarding potential plans to attempt to resettle Syrian refugees in Louisiana”.
But like his colleagues, the MI governor urged the president to “pause” the resettlement program until security concerns are addressed. Six of these are faith-based and the faith-based organizations play a large role in resettling refugees in the United States.
I understand the anxiety that many Americans are feeling right now.
“Gov. Bryant’s position hasn’t changed on accepting Syrian refugees, ” said Knox Graham, a spokesman for Bryant. Those coming from Syria go through an additional screening process called the Syria Enhanced Review process, which includes an in-person interview. Those opposed, those supporting and those that are neutral – certainly to communicate about how the vetting process works and a little bit more about why this program is so important for our country. ISIS has garnered a lot of power and influence and something tells me they would find smarter and easier ways to attack the United States.
