Black Lives Matter Protesters Shot: 3 White Men Arrested For Allegedly
Masked men opened fire on demonstrators participating in that vigil on Monday, a Black Lives Matter Minneapolis official said. “They have called for peace and a cessation of protests for Jamar’s sake and the safety of the community”.
Local Black Lives Matter activists say the gunmen in the attacks were the same white supremacists who had previously threatened them. Inside it, his obituary said the 24-year-old man “liked to swim, fish, listen to music, play basketball, be with family and take trips to Charlotte, North Carolina”. His obituary testified to his love for swimming and fishing, noted that he had been working for a local trucking company and vehicle wash, and recalled that “as a child, Jamar was always full of energy and had a big smile”.
Clark’s funeral service was preceded by a two-hour viewing, during which a seemingly unending stream of family filed past the casket, Clark’s face covered with a thin white veil.
“I haven’t been feeling good, but not like sick, more like time is running out”, the 24-year-old wrote in his final Facebook status, which was read aloud by a friend standing a few feet from Clark’s casket. Clark’s cousin, Cameron, also was among mourners.
Some of the protesters who were shot the night before even managed to summon the strength to participate in the march.
Pastor Jayme Ali of God of All Truth Church told The Associated Press there will be an “emergency rally” Wednesday, with MPR News noting a rally is planned at 4 p.m. Wednesday, with a similar rally set for the same time in New York City and some other locations.
“Jamar, your life did and does have objective”, Shiloh Bishop Richard D. Howell Jr. said at the funeral. “Your death was not in vain!” “Cause apparently fighting police and fighting paramedics is good enough to let you off with a slap on the wrist, especially when you go for an officer’s weapon”.
Mayor Betsy Hodges was not present at the funeral.
At Jamar Clark’s Funeral, some call for an end to the protests while others refuse to stand down until justice is served.
But church elders also frequently mixed in messages of a “need for justice” for Clark’s death.
Dozens of demonstrators huddled around bonfires early Sunday in frigid temperatures at an encampment outside a Minneapolis police station that they have said will not be dismantled until their demands are met. Jamar Clark did not have to die. The first, Allen Lawrence “Lance” Scarsella III, was caught by police. Sources said Nathan Gustavsson, 21, of Hermantown, and Daniel Macey, 26, of Pine City, were arrested after they turned themselves in. All three suspects are white. Police arrested and later released a 32-year-old man from Minneapolis, who they determined was not at the shooting scene.
Congressman Keith Ellison said the shooting of five black protesters Monday night should be investigated as a hate crime. “If she’s for this city, justice will be found”. An inquiry to the Minneapolis Police Department was not immediately returned. She did not comment further on the shooting Tuesday.
The victims were shot while protesting the police-involved shooting of Jamar Clark, an African-American, on November 15. Authorities said they were still seeking additional suspects. None suffered life-threatening wounds.
Some witnesses of the incident said Clark was cuffed, but police have said he was not.
Clark’s family wore t-shirts that said “I Matter” to the funeral, and several speakers thanked the protesters for bringing about awareness and change, according to Star Tribune.
