Man convicted of killing wife, posting photo on Facebook
A Florida man who killed his wife and posted a photo of the body on Facebook has been found guilty of murder.
The small-time actor’s trial lasted two weeks and jurors reached a guilty verdict after six hours of deliberation.
“He planned to execute Jen and he executed his plan”, prosecutor Leah Klein said in closing arguments, the Associated Press reported. “She wanted to push Derek, and she pushed him too far”, he said.
Today, Medina, 33, was convicted of the second-degree murder of Jennifer Alfonso and could be given a life sentence WITHOUT parole.
He chillingly confessed to the slaying and predicted his own downfall on the Facebook post. In the picture, Alfonso’s cheek and arm were bloody and she slumped on the ground awkwardly.
Medina earned the nickname “Facebook killer”, and since then, news producers and consumers have feasted on twists and turns of his antics and judicial fate. Enlarge Derek Medina/via Facebook Medina confessed to the killing on his Facebook page. Investigators testified that Alfonso threw mascara containers and towels at Medina, who pointed a gun at her in the bedroom but did not fire. Prosecutors say Medina killed Alfonso because she threatened to leave him and that she had no knife. Medina’s behavior was so transparent that not even in “Stand Your Ground” insane Florida did his woe-is-me defense fly. “I don’t know if they would have been swayed if we would have had our crime scene re-constructionist being able to explain shadow placement, which would have buttressed our position that she had a knife”.
The next and final post, called “Rip Jennifer Alfonso”, was a gruesome photograph showing a woman in a black leotard slumped on the floor.
Jurors did not opt to convict Medina of first-degree murder, as prosecutors sought. Indeed, in the infamous Facebook post, Medina wrote that his wife was punching him, and he implied she had a history of abusing him.
The defense argued Alfonso, 27, abused drugs, beat her husband and was a Satan worshiper.
