Minneapolis police say several shot near protest scene
“We appreciate Black Lives Matter for holding it down and keeping the protests peaceful”, Sutton said in a statement. A video produced by a journalist at the scene revealed people running and screaming for an ambulance while a young African American man can be seen on the ground in pain presumably from a gunshot wound. “And we get to 14th and Morgan [avenues], and all I heard was pow…pow, pow, pow, pow, pow”. None of the protesters suffered life-threatening injuries.
Later on Tuesday, police reported the arrest of a 32-year-old Hispanic man in South Minneapolis and a 23-year-old white man in nearby Bloomington, but they did not give further details nor did they clarify if they are two of the three supremacists they are looking for. A 26-year-old white man and a 21-year-old white man turned themselves in at about 2:30 p.m., according to the Minneapolis Police Department. Police say Clark was fighting for possession of the gun of one of two officers responding to a disturbance call. But some people who said they saw the shooting allege that Clark was handcuffed.
His name was not released pending charges, police said.
The prosecutor’s office also said Tuesday that a case in the shooting of Clark would be presented to a grand jury.
The protests erupted after 24-year-old Jamar Clark died in a confrontation with police November 15. Police issued a warning Friday night, asking demonstrators to be vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to authorities. Eventually, the three people left the crowd and began walking down the street, and a few protesters followed. Some made racist comments.
Despite his injury, Martin returned to the protest at the 4th Precinct.
Protesters were settling in for their ninth night of demonstrations when something just didn’t seem right. A camp grew up outside the precinct, and scores of protesters were arrested for blocking traffic on Interstate Hwy. 94.
“My memory from past year was that police were the first to be violent”, said Fox.
Protest leaders had called for a huge demonstration to counter the masked men, who demonstrators said were trying to intimidate them.
“Thank you to the community for the incredible support you have shown for our family in this hard time”, his brother Eddie Sutton said in a statement, according to the paper.
When they reached a corner, the three people pulled out weapons and opened fire. He and others said at least three members of the group were wearing masks that covered the lower half of their faces. Four officers stood idle along a wall outside of the precinct during the shooting, Clark said.
In the days since then, protesters occupied and then were ejected from the foyer of the 4th Precinct.
“It was so busy and chaotic”, Wronski-Riley said.
“There’s no audio, but it appears after the shot was sacked, one of the officers comes back into the camera view”. Police have not confirmed a connection between the shooting and the protest.
To gather students for the rally at Northrop, a group of students went through several classroom buildings chanting for justice for Jamar, and encouraging students to join them.
“Tonight, white supremacists attacked the #4thPrecinctShutDown in an act of domestic terrorism”, Black Lives Matter Minneapolis said on Facebook.
