Sania Mirza gives West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee a tennis lesson
In what was surely a rare sight for both sports and politics aficionados, Indian tennis superstar Sania Mirza was spotted teaching West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee a few shots of the game in Kolkata on Wednesday.
But before it could seem a cakewalk for them, there was some serious action in store as the world number one women’s doubles player Sania along with her former partner Bhupathi bounced back breaking fifth and seventh games to take a 4-3 lead and made it 5-3 with Bhupathi holding his serve.
Mirza has had a fantastic year after pairing up with Swiss legend Martina Hingis.
The match between the pairs of Mahesh Bhupathi/Sania Mirza Leander Paes/Martina Navartilova and will begin at 6:30pm at the centre court.
However, the Hyderabad girl, married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, has had to deal with her fair share of controversies this year.
After every victory that she encounters, she is faced with yet another reporter, asking her yet another regressive question that they won’t dare ask a male athlete.
Sania paid her tribute to Martina saying, “It is a great honour to be standing here with someone who has achieved everything in tennis”.
“I don’t read newspapers very often”. Kids as young as three can also come and learn to play tennis. Martina, having set foot in the city well past midnight after a 24-hour journey from Florida, wasn’t expected to be the best player on court, and she wasn’t. That’s what I know how to do best.
“I think doubles is more fun than singles because here you can talk to somebody in the middle of the match but if you talk to yourself in singles people will think whether you’re mad! Where you see me now is because of the hard work I have put in for the last 10 years”.
