Champions League: Bayern and Barca qualify
Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller has set a new record as he became the youngest player in history to chalk up 50 Champions League victories.
The Gunners must beat Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday to keep their hopes alive and need second-placed Olympiakos to lose in Munich.
Three goals in the opening 20 minutes left Olympiakos dazed and Bayern rightfully dreaming of a sixth European crown, the first under coach Pep Guardiola.
A two-goal triumph over the Greek champions – thrashed 6-0 by Bayern Munich in midweek – will send Arsenal through and Cech has backed his side to pull it off in their final pool match. The victory confirmed Bayern will advance to the last 16 as Group F winners, regardless of their final group match at Dinamo Zagreb in a fortnight, for which Badstuber will be suspended.
“It is a heavy defeat but if you want to challenge such an wonderful team you have to be the top of your game”, he said.
“I should have had it”, said Neuer, who was back at his former club.
They did not have the chance to warm up at the weekend, though, with their game against Panathinaikos called off due to crowd problems, although Guardiola does not see that unexpected break as an advantage to the Greek side. “We can qualify for the next round as the top side in the group [if we win]”.
BATE opened the scoring in the second minute in Belarus through Mikhail Gordeichuk, but Admir Mehmedi equalised in the second half for Leverkusen.
Bayern now tops the group with 12 points and can not be dislodged with one match remaining.
The star-studded top 10 also includes such Champions League luminaries as Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Victor Valdes of Barcelona, Bayern’s Bastian Schweinsteiger, and David Beckham, who played in the competition for Man United, Real, Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
“It’s always important to finish the group first”, Bayern captain Philipp Lahm told Sky.
The Blues are second in Group G and a win at the Sammy Ofer Stadium will take them through if Dynamo Kiev fail to beat Porto.
Although Olympiacos have been now in superior quantity they did not pose any menace to Bayern’s defence. Instead Bayern pressed for another goal and were rewarded in the 75th minute as Coman got his name on the scoreboards after heading home Mueller’s assist.
