The Hunger Games wins the top spot at the box office
Then again, while $248 million total is an impressive number, last year’s Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1 opened at $274.9. Still, this was enough to earn the movie a spot in the Top 5. Costing $26 million to make, the movie is hoping to pick up steam as some of the buzz dies down on the big blockbusters that have opened in these recent weeks, as the holidays getting into high gear has the potential to drive people to holiday-themed movies. It is the first time that all three characters have been together all at once for the majority of the movie; the issue takes full attention of several scenes. “It’s nice to be able say we are one of only 34 films to have ever had an opening weekend over $100 million”.
Part 2, the final film in the series, we can all sense more or less what’s coming, because even the “surprises” unfold with grinding inevitability.
Francis Lawrence, the director of “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay part 1 & 2” also spoke about exploring the beginnings of the Hunger Games. Also starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman, director Billy Ray’s movie centres on a team of FBI investigators whose lives are thrown into torment when one of their number (Roberts) discovers that her daughter has been murdered.
But my friends and I put our feelings aside and went to see the movie.
Overall, Mockingjay Part 2 provides an impressive and satisfying ending to another one of Hollywood’s most beloved franchises, one that critics and fans alike will be pleased with as it delivers both action-packed thrills and emotional depths. Its $14.6 million brought its running tally to $153 million.
“Secret In Their Eyes”, a murder mystery starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman, scored $6.6 million in its first weekend.
In limited release, the Weinstein Company scored with “Carol”.
“Reviews and word of mouth will drive this film”, said Erik Lomis, distribution chief at the Weinstein Company.
British gangster film ‘Legend’ opened at four locations to a decent $83,000.
And while Mockingjay, Pt. 2 may have had the weakest debut of the four films in the franchise with a $101 million box office take on its opening weekend, it was still the top-grossing film of the weekend.
Expectations run high when films become so popular and successful in such a short a time, said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for Rentrak, which provided the box office figures. “There’s too many movies, too many distractions, and so much going on in the world right now”.
