Telecom Minister favours more towers for better services

The call drop problem in Indian telecommunication network seems to be overcoming these days.

According to telecom regulator’s statistics published on Tuesday, mobile operators had a call drop rate of as much as 24.59% for 2G services and 16.13% for 3G services in the April-June quarter.

The acceptable rate of calls getting disconnected automatically in India is 2% and can go up to 3% in peak hours or congested area. For this, new steps have to be taken.

The minister said “NDMC has been approached and they are willing to give their sites”. Post office is also ready to give sites. He added that near about 1.833 million mobile sites have been installed in India by telecom operators.

The minister informed that the operators had installed 7,528 new cell sites for 2G services and 14,751 for 3G services, of which 760 cell sites for 2G services and 1,332 for 3G services were in Delhi.

Prasad stated that state of affairs has improved due to further set up of cellular towers, repairing of non-practical cell websites and enchancment in community design.

“Earlier about 35,000 cell sites were found to be defective”. Prasad said the department had spoken to the New Delhi Municipal Corporation as well as the postal department to allow usage of more sites by private telecom operators and also to fix a reasonable tariff rate for erecting a site.
