Xiaomi’s Mi Pad 2 is an iPad mini that runs Windows 10
Along with the Redmi Note 3 price range smartphone, Xiaomi additionally took the covers off its MiPad 2 tablet. Both phablets have a similar body shape – rectangular, with curved edges on the back, but the Redmi Note 3 uses metal instead of plastic and has a fingerprint scanner under the rear camera.
The Redmi Note 3 smartphone and Mi Pad 2 tablet are aimed at the Chinese market, but their features and low prices would make them attractive in other regions.
It’s powered by a MediaTek Helio X10 processor and 2GB RAM.
On the back, the slate features an 8-megapixel photo snapper with autofocus, LED flash, and video recording, while on the front there’s a secondary 5-megapixel camera for selfies. It will feature 4G LTE network connectivity. It runs MIUI 7 based on Android OS. This shouldn’t come as a surprise because the Redmi Note 3 should have been called the Redmi Note 2 Pro, so obviously the similarities would be more than just minor. Xiomi has ditched the Nvidia Tegra K1 processor of the original Mi Pad in favour of a 64-bit Intel Atom X5-Z8500 CPU, and has paired that with 2GB of RAM.
The Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 is bigger in size. Compared to the Redmi Note 3, it is priced slightly on the higher side and even the specifications aren’t that impressive. The company claims that the device can unlock with your fingerprint in just 0.3 seconds, which is quite spectacular for a budget device. The device features a 7.90-inch display with a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels at a PPI of 326 pixels per inch.
The device will be available in three colour variants – gold, silver and dark grey.
Xiaomi’s flagship tablet, meanwhile, is said to be thinner and lighter this time around.
Surprisingly, there will also be a variant of Mi Pad 2 64GB that runs on Windows 10.
Elsewhere, there’s a 13 MP rear camera and 5 MP front-facing camera. The “Fresh Key” function of the fingerprint sensor can give shortcut functions like switching ON the flashlight and locking specific apps. The 16GB model will retail for RMB 999 (US$156) and the 64GB model will go for RMB 1,299 (US$203).
