Eagles coach Chip Kelly has GM Chip Kelly to blame
For both parties involved, I couldn’t imagine making a bigger mistake. Do a good job and you get a promotion with more responsibilities. When that happens, Kelly is a good enough coach to get the most out of that quarterback. Congratulations! Do a lousy job there and what happens? They still are in the thick of that division race, let’s not forget about that, and if they go in to Detroit on Thanksgiving Day and win, we’ll have a different conversation next week. “That’s embarrassing. Because it has nothing to do with football, you just have no clue what you’re doing”.
It’s time to give thanks in the City of Brotherly Love, though it probably doesn’t feel like there’s much about which to give thanks for Philly sports fans.
The increasing subsect of Philadelphia Eagles fans dissatisfied with head coach Chip Kelly’s performance may be about to get its wish.
So far, it’s added up to a 4-6 start in which players are squabbling, once-revered schemes are falling apart and Kelly appears lost in the face of the chaos.
These rumors have been going on in the last few weeks as the Eagles have been a letdown this season.
Instead, a new GM arrived and blew the team to hell. New quarterback, new running backs, new leading wide receivers, new cornerbacks; it’s all so new. Maybe you recall the story I wrote last summer, after Kelly’s sitdown session with beat writers. However what is clear is there is an environment in Philadelphia by which people know they’ll have a sympathetic ear once they take nameless shots at Kelly.
“Hey. Hey, uh, that was supposed to be a touchdown”.
Payton isn’t too dissimilar from Kelly, except for the fact that he has no reputation for callously discarding star-caliber players who don’t buy in to his “system”. And now, 10 games into the present season, we can say with some authority: wow did this dude ever f*** it up. The Eagles consistently change games with their defense, and this year they have been successful while dealing with injuries to their best linebackers, Kiko Alonso and DeMeco Ryans. Kelly was not like that. The same way Kelly won with Andy Reid’s team, so can the next coach with Kelly’s team if that’s what it comes to. “When you’re not successful, I think guys are grasping at excuses, to be honest with you”. However, the Eagles committed to the Kelly program three years ago, and dismantling it now would bring about disaster the likes of which would make this season seem like a cakewalk. The NFL needs people like Kelly to show up from time to time and point out how stupid everyone has been.
The agent also said there’s at least one player on the team who’s using an injury as a reason not to play, even though it’s an injury he’d be able to play through, because “he won’t play hurt for Chip”. Nick Foles isn’t a Super Bowl winning quarterback. The only thing that could prevent him from succeeding was his ego.
Kelly came with his own pedigree, of course. Then last Sunday, the Buccaneers shredded the Eagles for 521 total yards of offense.
Earlier this year, Kelly was talking about how well Eli Manning was playing this season. Kelly clearly still wants to coach, and he’ll have options galore in 2016.
Suddenly there are hot takes from everywhere suggesting Kelly and the Eagles are at some sort of point of no return.
