A Few Clips from Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur
In the Pixar canon, “The “Good Dinosaur” must be seen as a disappointment”.
Meg LeFauve wrote the screenplay for “The Good Dinosaur”, she also wrote the screenplay for this year’s “Inside Out” with Pete Docter and Josh Cooley.
Forget Pixar movies don’t tend to fall into instant-classic status anymore.
“We have the most hard ones to find because everything is outdoors so we had to cheat some of the materials like the pizza planet truck [that’s appeared in every Pixar movie], it’s not essentially metal”.
Prepare your Kleenex on Thanksgiving as “The Good Dinosaur” will have you cry buckets of tears during the holiday. In the player below, you can check out our interviews with Good Dinosaur cast members Jeffrey Wright, Anna Paquin, AJ Buckley, Sam Elliot and, as the voice of Arlo the Apatosaurus, young Raymond Ochoa. In a nice bit of misdirection, Arlo hatches after his siblings from a much bigger egg but is, in fact, tiny compared to them.
In the next clip Arlo is trying to explain to his little human friend what a family is.
Arlo, tiny and full of fear, can’t handle farm life, but his dad sees big things in him, giving him the task of protecting the food from “critters”. At one point, after Arlo and Spot find themselves in one of so many dicey situations, they’re inadvertently saved by some Tyrannosaurus rex cowboys, who lost their herd of what look like buffalo on steroids during a storm.
Good Dinosaur director Peter Sohn was a former story artist on Pixar’s “Finding Nemo”, “The Incredibles”, “Ratatouille” and “WALL-E” and drew inspiration from frontier movies like the 1972 film “Jeremiah Johnson” that starred Robert Redford as well as his trips to Wyoming, Idaho and OR that played a huge influence on the movie’s setting. Human audiences will relate to young Arlo’s desire to conquer his fears and the humorous and memorable characters he encounters on his prehistoric path. Check out these clips from The Good Dinosaur before it hits theaters November 25.
Rated PG for mature themes. Also, there’s a very sad moment, but it’s handled quickly, and the movie moves on.
The production history of Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur was marred with delays, a producer/director change, and a complete refurbishment of the story, with a total of six writers credited on the final product.
And, oh man, the visuals. “The exact details of this world are new, but the story beats and even specific characters feel like they were imported from “The Lion King, ‘ ‘The Incredible Journey, ‘ ‘The Land Before Time, ‘ ‘The Jungle Book, ‘ and other familiar features”.
Carrying the voice load, the little-known Ochoa (“Mr. Peabody and Sherman”) makes Arlo easy to root for, and Bright’s growling and howling as Spot is a treat.
“The Good Dinosaur”, though, is something different.
