National Dog Show Presented by Purina Will Feature 7 New AKC-Sanctioned
In the modern-day National Dog Show, dogs can be entered in one of seven groups, terrier, toy, working, hound, herding, sporting and non-sporting, and they compete for $20,000 in prize money. But if you cannot get to a television, you can also watch a live online stream of the Thanksgiving competition here via NBC Sports Live Extra.
The National Dog Show Presented by Purina will air on NBC on Thanksgiving Day, November 26 from noon- 2 p.m.in all time zones. With their coverage of the Olympic Games and other events for NBC, Weir and Lipinski have become popular television personalities who will now lend their distinctive presence to The National Dog Show. The show describes itself as “the most widely viewed dog show in America”.
Dogs will be judged in three rounds – best of breed, best of group and the ultimate award, best in show.
Watch Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski at the 2015 National Dog Show. And there’s a Spanish Water dog, a pet ensconced in Spain for centuries which herds, hunts and makes a good companion. The Purina National Dog Show Twitter account is already tweeting out photos and descriptions of some of the top dogs, and will be live-tweeting throughout the event. For those with a cable network or satellite subscription, you will be able to login to NBC Sports online with your cable provider information.
Dog shows date back to 19th-century English pubs, when winners received prizes of guns, not trophies, according to a brief history compiled by Purina, the show’s sponsor.
This year’s is the 14th iteration of the National Dog Show. Expert analysis will be offered by David Frei, an American Kennel Club-licensed judge and host of USA Network’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Over 175 AKC-sanctioned breeds and varieties, including seven new breeds for 2015, will be among some 1,700 of the nation’s top dogs to compete for the title of “Best in Show” in the November competition open to all registered purebred dogs.
