Gladbach end Sevilla’s knockout stage hopes with 4-2 win
Schubert has steered the club from the bottom of the Bundesliga to fifth place with just two points dropped in eight games.
Monchengladbach took a huge step towards claiming a Europa League spot with a crushing 3-0 win over Sevilla at Borussia Park last night.
Sevilla coach Unai Emery admitted he “wanted more” out of his side’s disappointing Champions League campaign after they exited the completion following a 4-2 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach.
Stindl tapped in after 29 minutes and scored again after second half goals from Fabian Johnson and Raffael, to lift Gladbach to five points in the group and on track for a third place finish that leads to the Europa League, with their last group match against Manchester City next month. This time was different, though: “we were on the ball from the start, we were organised and managed to score at the right moments”.
This was Gladbach’s first win of their Champions League campaign, and Stindl was particularly pleased with an emphatic result on the European stage after earlier results killed their chances of progressing to the next round.
Raffael added a third and Vitolo cut the deficit in the 82nd before Stindl responded with his second goal of the evening a minute later in an entertaining finale that included a penalty for Sevilla in stoppage time and converted by Banega.
“For our part, we’ll do everything we can to confirm our place in the Europa League”.
“We need to be courageous and play our own game, like we did against Juventus”, said Gladbach’s Guinea winger Ibrahima Traore. Sevilla have lots of talent with Konoplyanko, Gamerio, Llorente, Immobile and Nzonzi will brign the game to Borussia Mochengladbach but I feel like the heart of Sevilla was ripped out after that away loss to Manchester City a game that Sevilla should have won not lost.
Sevilla are 11th in the Spanish league.
“Of course we’re very disappointed that we can no longer qualify for the knockout rounds”, he said.
“We aren’t under any pressure, but we do have a duty to give it our all”. We knew about Sevilla’s quality.
