The win was the first for Haiti over Honduras since 2007. But while Bradley has been a natural in the new role, Dempsey has done anything but sulk, scoring three goals and playing a key role in setting up Bradley’s against Panama. Dempsey is currently tied for the Golden Boot race with Mexico’s Oribe Peralta. But it ended up being a tale of two halves for both, as Klinsmann must have given them a magnificent pep talk in the halftime locker room because each of them played a very, very good second-half.

The match had several testy moments with three Panamanians receiving yellow cards.

“Mentally, [after] the first half, I felt real bad”, said Alvarado after the game.

Panama made just two changes following their 1-1 draw with Honduras – Valentin Pimentel and Eric Davis brought into the XI for Adolfo Machado and the suspended Luis Henriquez. Whoever scores more on the day will earn the tiebreaker and advance. It also was a move to bring stability and experience to a back line that lacked exactly that during group stage play. Honduras now has a negative one goal differential while Panama has a zero goal differential.

Panama had a few stoppage time opportunities to grab a winner on the counterattack, but couldn’t beat Guzan. If the first had been ponderous and predictable, like a one-sided game of checkers, the second looked more like a track meet.

The United States won the group by finishing with seven points. Haiti or Honduras is only able to attain four points with a win in their match.

The group stage has not been without its positives for the tournament holders, however.

The powerful striker has remained an uncontested starter throughout Klinsmann’s reign but, after a recent hamstring strain, has looked horrendously slugging during the group stages.
