Malmo vs. PSG: Winners and Losers from Champions League Game
Ibrahimovic said of his night: “It was fantastic”.
Mandzukic’s former side Atletico Madrid were one of four teams to reach the last 16 on Wednesday as Antoine Griezmann scored a goal in each half to defeat Turkey’s Galatasaray 2-0.
Speaking to French broadcaster Canal Plus, Ibrahimovic added: “I’m very happy”.
“He’s very proud of his city”.
It was clearly an emotional occasion for the striker who received a terrific reception before, during and after the game.
In the second half, Ibrahimovic marked his homecoming with a goal when he robbed Anton Tinnerholm of possession to bear down on goal, and his strike proved to have too much power for Wiland to keep out of the net.
Malmo fans rose to their feet and chanted “super Zlatan” as he was substituted five minutes before full-time.
“It seemed logical to me as well but all the players had to agree”. It was special for him and we wanted to show that we understood that and supported him.
Angel Di Maria scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain crushed Malmo 5-0 on Wednesday and secured a spot in the knockout stage of the Champions League.
Rafael Benitez was subjected to a nerve-jangling climax at Lviv Arena as Real Madrid conceded three late goals in their 4-3 Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk. That result means that the Spanish side are guaranteed to qualify as Group A winners and will in theory have an easier draw than PSG in the next round.
“In Paris as soon as we draw it’s a catastrophe and if we lose it becomes a tsunami [of criticism]”, he said.
“They [Real] can win all their matches – we lost one”.
The Ligue 1 champions continued to press and were rewarded by an outstanding goal by Di Maria, who combined wonderfully with Maxwell, before a free-kick from Moura put Malmo out of their misery.
But two minutes later PSG took the wind out of Malmo’s sails when Rabiot surged out of midfield and started a move that ended with him nodding Gregory van der Wiel’s cross past Johan Wiland.
