Detroit Lions Dominate Eagles on Thanksgiving Day
The NFL will show three games on Thanksgiving Day, and to kick things off the first Thanksgiving football event is in Detroit where the Lions will host the Philadelphia Eagles in a fight between two teams that seem to be unexpectedly headed in reverse directions.
Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson scored three straight touchdowns during that time.
For years on the wrong end of Thanksgiving blowouts, the Lions (4-7) jumped on the Eagles from the outset Thursday, scoring touchdowns on two of their first three possessions and holding Philadelphia (4-7) without a first down the entire second quarter. Golden Tate and Theo Riddick each added a score while Joique Bell added a rushing touchdown.
Matt Prater’s 48-yard field goal then opened a 10-point lead before Stafford’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Johnson came with 12 seconds left in the half, making it 24-7 at the break.
Taking advantage of one-on-one coverage, Stafford threw TD passes of 4 and 3 yards to Johnson in the third quarter. It will be the Eagles’ second time to play in a Thanksgiving event.
The Eagles have hit a road block, suffering straight losses at home, and now they are tasked with snapping that losing streak on the road. The following week, the Eagles beat the Giants by 20 points, and they had no problem beating the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. “It’s a whole lot more fun when you win”.
It didn’t help that Philadelphia lost starting cornerback Nolan Carroll to a broken ankle in the first half, either. DeMarco Murray is the Eagles leading rusher with 515 yards and four touchdowns and Jordan Matthews has 55 receptions. It hardly mattered as Sanchez finished 19 of 27 for 199 yards and two touchdowns – the second coming in the fourth quarter after the Eagles were down 45-7.
Unfortunately, though, Sanchez didn’t see Brandon Moore directly in front of him and ran into the offensive lineman’s backside, fumbling in the process.
Ansah now leads the National Football League in sacks with 11.5.
Despite the Eagles giving up 45 points in consecutive games, safety Malcolm Jenkins still believes he and his teammates are giving full effort.
These two teams – who have a bit of a history of bad-weather games – will play indoors in the comfortable confines of Ford Field, where Chip Kelly’s offense (and that of his opponent) can operate unencumbered by any wintery elements.
As that stat suggestions, the defense struggled to slow the Lions (4-7). The Lions have a very talented running back in rookie Ameer Abdullah, the biggest issue for him has been ball security.
On paper, this should be a relatively routine win for the ideal Panthers against a Dallas team that lost seven in a row before last weekend.
