Jamar Clark Protests: Police Hold Four Men In Connection With Shooting Of
Michael McDowell, organizer for Black Lives Matter Minneapolis, said police should have responded to Monday’s shooting faster. Wronski-Riley said that at this point the men “turned around and without warning and started shooting at us… everything was super chaotic”.
Council President Barb Johnson said the shooting Monday evening was a “continuation of a stressful time for the neighbors that live in the area surrounding the 4th Precinct”, adding that “they deserve some peace and some rest”.
A member of the federal group identified his office as the department’s Community Relations Service.
Authorities raided the man’s Bloomington home and seized a dozen weapons. The protesters are still dug in at the protest site, which hosted a concert on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.
“They sat here and watched”, Clark, 25, from the north side of Minneapolis, said.
“SECOND TIME IN TWO NIGHTS PROTESTORS HAVE BEEN SHOT AT”, one person tweeted.
In a video, Mayor Betsy Hodges said she “abhors last night’s acts”.
Police said Wednesday they had taken a 27-year-old man into custody. There were no details about who fired the shots at whom, or why. All four men are being held in the Hennepin County Jail without bail on suspicion of assault, according to online jail records.
Protesters also took to the streets in Chicago Tuesday night, where earlier in the day a white police officer was charged with first-degree murder in the 2014 shooting death of Laquan McDonald, a 17-year-old black teenager. Their injuries were not life threatening.
Tears flowed from the eyes of British Holloman as she listened to the Sam Cooke song “A Change Is Gonna Come” during a concert in front of the Fourth Precinct station on Tuesday in Minneapolis. They say they will not leave until they see justice, and they are demanding that authorities release video of the shooting. They are still searching for the other two suspects. Police are looking into the possibility of arresting another suspect, Minneapolis Public Information Officer Scott Seroka tells Newsweek.
His funeral earlier Wednesday attracted hundreds of people.
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the state agency investigating his death, is looking into whether he was restrained. “Jamar, your life did and does have goal”, said Bishop Richard D. Howell Jr., a bishop at the Shiloh Temple. Outside the funeral, as mourners streamed past, Ali said another rally was planned.
Ali spoke outside the church hosting Clark’s funeral. As the cars stopped in the protester encampment, people in cars also raised their fists and hung out of windows.
Protesters have demanded that authorities release video of Clark’s death.
Clark’s family and others urged protesters to suspend demonstrations and on the day of the funeral it was relatively quiet, although the funeral procession was to stop at the precinct en route from the North Minneapolis church to the cemetery.
Meetings were held November 14, 15, and 16 at New Salem Church.
Attempts to reach family members of the men were not successful.
Some people, including Clark’s family and the Minneapolis Urban League, have called for protests outside the police station to end to allow the next phase – the investigation by federal and local officials – to take place. Most bowed their heads as they walked through the glass doors. Meanwhile, investigators say that Clark had first attacked a woman and then obstructed paramedics who came to help her. In the ensuing melee one of the police officers shot him. When the masked men would not identify themselves, Black Lives Matter protesters escorted them away, but after going a half a block, they opened fire on the demonstrators, witnesses said.
