PM Modi releases Rs. 940 crore for Tamil Nadu flood relief
Tamil Nadu government has pegged destruction caused by north east monsoon at Rs 8,481 crore and chief minister J Jayalalithaa has urged prime minister Narendra Modi to immediately release Rs 2,000 crore for relief work.
According to Jayalalithaa, infrastructure, including roads and bridges, storm water drains, water supply, sewage and electricity supply systems had been battered in many areas. Most parts of Tuticorin district were inundated following heavy rains for the third day today, and the entire district collectorate wore a deserted look as officials were busy serving food and other essential commodities by boat to affected people besides rescuing some people from water-logged areas.
The finance ministry said a sum of Rs. 939 crore has been released to Tamil Nadu.
Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday ordered the immediate release of Rs. 940 crore towards relief and restoration work in Tamil Nadu, which faced extensive damage to life and property in the northeast monsoon.
Keeping in view the urgency of the situation, Jayalalithaa has also requested the Centre to dispatch a team immediately to make its on-the-spot assessment of damages and to release central financial assistance without any delay. The massive loss of lives and damage to infrastructure had been contained due to the precautionary measures of the state, he said, promising to submit the report to the Centre soon.
Sources in the State Government said that the team will visit places like Tambaram, Mudichur, Raja Kilpakkam and Kovilambakkam.

Jayalalithaa thanked Modi for promptly sending the team to the state upon her request. After their discussions with the state Revenue Department Principal Secretary Atulya Mishra and senior officials, they are scheduled to proceed on to their first hand assessment of the flood damages by splitting into different groups.
