Prince Harry Arrives in South Africa, Reunites With Young Orphan
The royal first met Mustu Postane when the young orphan was just four-years-old.
Prince Harry makes a speech during the opening of the Sentebale Mamohato children’s centre in Thaba Bosiu, Lesotho.
“They were far younger than me, and of course, their situation was a great deal more challenging than my own”.
After the opening ceremony, Prince Harry will travel on to Cape Town, where he will play in the Royal Salute Sentebale Polo Cup at Val de Vie to raise funds for his charity, before starting his official tour of South Africa on behalf of the government on Monday.
He continued: “I, like them, knew there would always be a gaping hole that could never be filled”.
“I was also struck by the many children I met whose lives had been shattered by the loss of a parent and in some cases, both”, he said. The charity has now been running for ten years and helped thousands of vulnerable children to get the support they need to lead happy and healthy lives.
Prince Harry will be in Lesotho today to officially open the centre with his charity, Sentebale (‘Forget Me Not’), which he created with fellow Prince, Prince Seeiso, in memory of their late mothers.
The prince said it became apparent to him after his first visit that the question “wasn’t when but how quickly we could put in place something to help these children”.
Now 14, Mutsu has been part of Harry’s Sentebale Scholarship programme and has benefited from residential care and financial grants.
The shy teenager, who speaks the Sesotho language and whose words were interpreted by a translator, added: “I’m very comfortable around Harry and Harry’s comfortable around me – we click”.
During the launch day for the Mamohato Children’s Centre Harry and Seeiso took the King and his wife Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso on a guided tour of the facilities.
Reports said the prince described the centre as a “milestone” in the work of the charity organization he founded with the Lesotho prince in 2006.
“He said to me, I’ve grown up”. Does it surprise you that he has maintained a friendship with this young African boy?
Harry first visited the region ten years ago when he visited the Mants’ase Children’s Home for orphans near Mohale’s Hoek, outside of Maseru. Powell began working for the royal family when Harry’s older brother Prince William was just six months old and remained a family fixture for 15 years.
Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso will be joined by other prestigious company at the event, including the South African Olympic gold medalist Ryk Neething, actress Laura Main from Call the Midwife, as well as a British spoken word artist, George the Poet, who will be in the audience enjoying the event, which is by invitation only. He added: “Behind those smiles it was clear they desperately needed care, attention and above all, love”.
