Paul Scholes criticises Manchester United’s Anthony Martial
Martial, who marked his debut for United with a memorable goal against Liverpool, missed two chances to put his side ahead in the first half against PSV.
Scholes told BT Sport Europe of Martial: “He’s still got a lot to learn goalscoring wise”. The former midfielder believes that the Frenchman is not a natural goalscorer and his emotions on the pitch suggest that he is unperturbed when he fails to get on the scoresheet, a trait unbecoming of a player in the top echelons of the game.
“I think his impact for us was wonderful”.
Rooney, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin all missed good chances as United dropped to second in Group B with one match left.
The former England man also pointed out that there is no use in being good defensively if they can’t take advantage and score goals at the other end. But attacking-wise, they don’t look a threat, they don’t look like they’re going to score goals.
Manchester United earned their 12th clean sheet of the season last night against PSV Eindhoven, but it was also for the fifth time this term that they played out a 0-0 stalemate. “I think they struggled for fitness, United, they looked really exhausted”.
“Whereas a centre forward, all you live for is scoring goals, all you want to do is score goals and he doesn’t look like that type of player to me, and maybe they need to go into the transfer market in January for one of them”.
“It’s just unbelievable how they are still in with a shout of qualifying and flying high in the Premier League”. Ex-players such as Paul Scholes have held nothing back in their observations about United’s somewhat conservative style of play and the club’s own fans have been chanting “attack, attack, attack” all too often in frustration at the team’s slow tempo.
