Donald Trump denies mocking reporter with a disability
The New York Times is angry that Donald Trump appeared to mock one of its reporters who has a physical disability, but the candidate denied Thursday that he was mimicking the reporter.
Kovaleski’s article about the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks has resurfaced in the news recently after Trump alleged that Muslims in New Jersey had celebrated the attacks. Trump had cited the article as evidence that his claims were correct, but Kovaleski has since pointed out that there was never any reference to the number of people seen celebrating. In tweets sent out Thanksgiving Day, Trump stated once more he did not poke fun fun of Serge Kovaleski, a New York NY Times journalist who suffers from arthrogryposis, a congenital condition in that restricts the movements of his arms. Maybe that’s what I said, ‘ ” Trump said.
Kovaleski’s friends and colleagues took to social media this week to excoriate Trump.
“Now the poor guy, you ought to see this guy”, Trump told thousands of supporters in South Carolina.”‘Ah, I don’t know what I said!
On Thursday, Trump posted a statement on his Twitter account saying “I have no idea” who Kovaleski is and claiming to have “one of the all-time great memories”.
Mr Trump was challenging recollections by Mr Kovaleski and many others about the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks on NY. “You’ve got to see this guy”, according to the Post.
In South Carolina, Trump described Kovaleski as a “nice guy” before mocking his comments about the article in The Post.
Trump’s campaign team has demanded an apology from the Times saying that he does not know anything about the reporter or anything about what the reporter looks like. I don’t remember!’ ” the businessman said in front of his supporters as he made odd movements with his arms during his speech.
As a reporter for the New York Daily news, Kovaleski covered Trump from 1987 to 1993 giving the two a history that stretch back.
Jay Ruderman of the Ruderman Family Foundation in Boston said the tycoon should apologise to Mr Kovaleski and the public.
“It is unacceptable for a child to mock another child’s disability on the playground, never mind a presidential candidate mocking someone’s disability as part of a national political discourse”, Ruderman said.
Trump has frequently attacked reporters who have displeased him during his presidential campaign. He has ridiculed Kelly and her show.
